From Bank Training Center to Meeting Hotel

Hotel Rantapuisto’s striking main building was completed in 1963 as the training center for Pohjoismaiden Yhdyspankki (later Suomen Yhdyspankki), set in the heart of East Helsinki’s natural landscape, an area recognized for its cultural significance. The bank had earlier acquired the Villa Furuborg, a Jugend-style villa built in 1917, which had served as the summer residence of the Rosenlew family.

The training center’s pavilion-style layout and glass connecting corridors seamlessly integrate the surrounding nature with the interior spaces. Architects Ragnar Ypyä and Martta Martikainen-Ypyä drew inspiration from Alvar Aalto’s architecture (Ragnar Ypyä had worked in Aalto’s office in the 1920s) as well as the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.

The design’s rational and clean lines, combined with the forested and rocky surroundings, create a harmonious environment. Every detail of the building was carefully considered, making the overall effect a true work of art. A rich variety of wood types has been used throughout the interiors, and the building still showcases characteristic architectural features of its era: the structure consists of multiple wings, atrium courtyards, large rooms, and spacious corridors lined with floor-to-ceiling glass. Several original interior elements remain, including lighting fixtures, fireplaces, and ceiling structures.

In the 1980s, growing training needs led to the construction of a new conference wing, an auditorium, and a sports hall. The economic downturn in the 1990s, followed by the merger of SYP with Kansallis-Osake-Pankki (KOP) into Merita Bank, reduced the demand for corporate training. During the 2000s, Rantapuisto transitioned to serve all guests as Unitas Congress Center, and later as Meeting Hotel Rantapuisto. The hotel opened under the international Best Western brand in April 2014 and became an independent hotel on August 22, 2016, continuing its legacy as Hotel Rantapuisto.

This history reflects a seamless blend of architectural heritage, natural beauty, and modern hospitality, making Hotel Rantapuisto a unique destination for meetings, events, and leisure stays.
